Press Apprentice

POSITION SUMMARY

Able to run all functions on the feeder end of the printing presses. Perform steps and functions necessary within the plate room. And perform material handling needs, material movement, fork truck work, etc. Maintain ink levels at the printing presses, along with the ability to hanging plates with accuracy & efficiency. The role is a prerequisite to becoming a Press Operator - so working alongside pressmen, learning & observing is expected.

PRIMARY FUNCTIONS

• Operate and maintain all devices at the feeder end of the printing press.
• Operate and maintain all devices in the plate room and material handling area.
• Efficient & Accurate performance of functions within the Plate Room - understanding materials, color profiles & printing press profiles - in order to process plates accurately for the job specification.
• Maintain ink levels at the presses - monitoring, maintaining, supplies management, etc.
• Hang and exchange printing plates on all printing presses - accurately, correctly and within proper process & procedures.
• Assist pressmen with preventative maintenance steps, appropriate for the machinery within the printing press department.
• Thorough understanding of safety devices & safety procedures used on the machinery in the printing press department.
• Ensures that all material, ink, and printing plates are prepared for oncoming shift.
• Maintains make ready material & scrap areas.

OTHER FUNCTIONS

• Good understanding of how the printing presses operate.
• General understanding of cleaning products, fountain solutions, etc.
• General understanding of various types of rollers in the presses and processors.
• Ability to perform all aspects of raw goods material handling.
• Ability to systematically troubleshoot feeder issues.
• Good understanding of materials.
• Maintain 5S specifications.
• General mechanical adjustments at the feeder end of the printing presses.
• This job may require overtime.
• Any other duties as assigned.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

• High School Diploma or equivalent required.
• Must possess and maintain a valid Fork Truck License.
• Good computer knowledge and great mechanical aptitude.
• Ability to lift 50 pounds.
• Ability to be on your feet for an extended period of time.
• Ability to use hands, arms and wrists.
• Good mathematical skills.
• Good understanding of standard mechanical tools, (wrenches, screw drivers, measuring devices, etc.).
• Excellent communication skills in a team atmosphere.
• Ability to read (work instructions, production orders and scheduling reports).
• Good organizational skills.
